(RKM) - The short answer is that I think this is the basic flavour of real life - as Roberto Benigni says in the movie Down by Law - it’s a sad and a beautiful world. The human condition is mostly tragic and human beings are basically savage apes. Civilised modern life puts a comforting and comfortable veneer on that, but the whole essence of epic fantasy is that the veneer is stripped away to usher in a world of war between men carrying sharp edged steel. If you’re going to write in that mode, I think you have a writerly duty to at least attempt to address the human truths that are inherent in the genre’s assumptions.

(RKM) - Again, I think this comes back to the underlying human truths inherent in the form - a man who makes his living from chopping up other human beings with sharpened steel isn’t likely to be a very pleasant person to be around. We consistently graft unrealistic contemporary moral values onto these fantasy heroes, and the message it sends ends up being childish, like something out of a kid’s movie, like Disney. That’s fine if that’s the kind of entertainment you want, but for me, as soon as violence and warfare come into the equation, I think we’re out of the kid’s enclosure and our characters need to reflect that exit. To be fair, the acts you mention Ringil carrying out come at great emotional cost to him - but in the end, he’s a man forged in the fires of hate and death, living in a world of ignorance and casual violence, and there’s a limit to how far he can hold that context at arm’s length. I wasn’t trying to create a dark and twisted character, so much as examine how an essentially decent character would end up dark and twisted by the human realities an epic fantasy world would inevitably throw at him.

(RKM) - I think it is a curious dysfunction of fantasy fiction that it can deal very comfortably with such human drivers as ambition, revenge, family loyalty, greed, patriotism and friendship, but when it comes to what is probably the most powerful drive we possess - sexual desire - it goes oddly quiet. And similarly, I think it’s strange, in this day and age, that non-heterosexual characters and relationships are so rarely brought to the fore. But I didn’t consciously set out to subvert those parameters. Both Ringil and Archeth earned their sexuality in the writing - it emerged from the context completely organically, gave them the required outsider status that is so handy in noir heroes, removed the almost inevitable offspring that a pre-modern context would imply, opened up the possibilities of rejecting the social norms regardless of their high status in that society.
As to the actual nuts and bolts of describing gay male or lesbian sex, of course the lesbian sex was easier to do because as a fairly conventional straight male I find images of two women having sex arousing - and you can use that arousal, just as you would in a hetero scene, to evoke the intensity you need. I don’t find male on male sex arousing, so that was more of a reach, I had to try harder to get that intensity. But I approached both with the same care, and in each case respectively I consulted a gay man and a lesbian with the end result to make sure that it passed muster. As a writer, you want to get it right, you want to catch the human truths of your subject matter, because if you don’t, well, what kind of writer does that make you? So the further you get from your own personal comfort zone, the more you need to approach the material with care.

Tu ne preferisci uno in particolare?

(RKM) - I certainly started out with a preference for Ringil, mainly because he was the first one on the page. But as the characters grew in the telling, that pretty quickly went out the window. By about halfway through The Steel Remains, I was enjoying writing each of the three pretty much the same. The point is that if you do the character work well, all your characters, even the minor ones, become a pleasure to write.

Puoi darci qualche anticipazione?

(RKM) - Yes, the path Ringil is on can’t be reversed and he’ll follow it to its inevitable end. Expect a lot of very dark, very unpleasant magic - and also a few fuck ups along the way because, well, magic isn’t any easier to master than any other skill or form of combat; you can get it wrong, you can miscalculate, or it can go wrong on you all by itself. Even with magic, there are no guarantees!
