Eccomi qui. Mi trasferisco a Washington per iniziare il lavoro dei miei sogni: scienziato presso l'Agenzia per la Protezione dell'Ambiente. Sulla carta, dovrei essere al settimo cielo. Ma la carta brucia così in fretta. Veloce come una casa in fiamme.
Dopo The Love Hypothesis non potevo stare lontano dal mondo raccontato dalla Hazelwood, con protagoniste ragazze toste e agguerrite che cercano di farsi strada nei settori "maschili" delle STEM (le tradizionali materie scientifiche per intenderci) senza rinunciare alle amicizie, alla vita e all'amore.
Le tre novelle STEMinist ci raccontano le vicende di tre amiche, "amiche per prima cosa e scienziate per sempre", ciascuna nella propria specializzazione.
Mara è ingegnere ambientale, attenta ai cambiamenti climatici e alla lotta contro l'inquinamento, ed è entusiasta di iniziare un nuovo lavoro a Washington D.C. proprio presso l'EPA, senza dover cercarsi un costoso alloggio: la sua mentore (e vera famiglia), l'eccentrica professoressa Helena, le ha lasciato in eredità una casa.
Tuttavia, all'arrivo, scopre che in realtà dispone solo di metà immobile; l'altra metà è del nipote trentenne della prof, il fascinoso, scaltro. e dispettoso Liam, che è in aggiunta un avvocato di successo delle compagnie petrolifere: in altre parole, un doppio Nemico!
Lei non vuole cedere, lui nemmeno; perciò la convivenza forzata ha inizio, a colpi di musica, lotte per la temperatura e reciproca (falsa) in tolleranza.
Un mini romanzo (cento pagine) assolutamente delizioso, dove si sorride, si parteggia a turno per i due e si vorrebbe abbracciare Liam (A man of few smiles and even fewer words), che comunque è molto più comprensivo di tanti maschi ottusi.
