Quanto mi spiace essere arrivata in fondo all'ultima di queste novelle dedicate dalla Hazelwood a tre amiche decise a far carriera in ambito scientifico, senza rinunciare a cercare comunque la felicità.
Direi che questa è anche la storia che mi è piaciuta di più, con le personalità dei personaggi più approfondite e dove forse ho avvertito maggiormente l'impostazione scientifico-divulgatrice della stessa autrice.
Hannah è davvero una scienziata in senso classico.
Dopo un'applicazione incerta e annoiata allo studio, ha scoperto da adolescente il settore dei viaggi spaziali, appassionandosi all'atterraggio del primo rover su Marte. E da allora tutto è sempre stato improntato ad arrivare lì, alla Nasa, al programma spaziale, compresa l'esperienza dal vivo nell'Artico.
Infatti il polo Nord, con i suoi ghiacci perenni, è l'unica zona della Terra che assomiglia a quelle che devono essere le condizioni proibitive su Marte, per cui soltanto lì si possono testare macchinari ed equipaggiamento.
Ma nel frattempo ha incontrato Ian per un'intervista: Ian è il cugino-qualcosa di Mara, ma è anche un ragazzo prodigio, una personalità brillante e rispettata alla Nasa. La scintilla tra le due menti scatta subito, ma Hannah è in crescita, deve raggiungere prima le sue tappe.
Quindi tutto va quasi a rotoli, fino a una tormenta e alla quasi fine di ogni sogno, senza neppure aver conquistato Marte (che, tra parentesi, ha gli stessi colori di Ian).
Molto dolce, molto simpatico. Non capisco le critiche sul fatto che le trame siano simili: sono storie dedicate a donne di scienza, è evidente che ci troverete ore di studio, laboratori, la dura realtà dei ricercatori.
Okay. This is no first kiss.
This is a fucking masterpiece.
