Ho amato Babel e adoro, semplicemente, i darkacademia, per cui questa è stata una lettura abbastanza veloce, soprattutto per la curiosità suscitata dall'incipit misterioso.
Ellsbeth si reca all'università di Newlyn per studiare arti arcane, anche se alla sua passione si è aggiunto uno scopo in più, ovvero indagare sulla scomparsa dell'amata sorellina.
Già questo, la rende un'allieva ambiziosa e testarda, mossa dal rimpianto di non aver potuto agire prima; se, quindi, il suo obiettivo passa attraverso una collaborazione con il professor Rawlins, lei lo deve persuadere ad aiutarla a tutti i costi (anche scrivendo esilaranti e pazze email, tra le parti più ironiche del romanzo).
A sua volta, il professore era un brillante ricercatore che si è rassegnato all'insegnamento dopo un evento tragico del passato.
La loro relazione agegap parte piano, ma poi si infiamma: infatti, sono uniti dalla ricerca della magia proibita, ma anche da un'attrazione fisica significativa (e altrettanto proibita, visto che sono insegnante e allieva).
Ho trovato l'ambientazione oscura ben resa, anche se non mi aspettavo che la parte romance/spicy prendesse così il sopravvento (non che non abbia apprezzato). Inoltre, mi è piaciuto che entrambi i protagonisti non fossero del tutto buoni e zuccherosi, ma che ci fosse sempre un certo grado di diffidenza tra loro, come se ciascuno potesse tradire l'altro sul più bello.
Buon ritmo e stile scorrevole. Aggiungo che il livello di inglese è accessibile anche per chi non è madrelingua (se può essere utile).
4 stelle, ma solo perché avrei voluto più spazio per la parte relativa ai misteri della setta. Se potessi usare uno slogare: più dark e meno love 😆.

I loved "Babel" and I simply adore the darkacademias, so this was a fairly quick read, especially given the curiosity sparked by the mysterious opening.
Ellsbeth goes to Newlyn University to study the arcane arts, although her passion has been joined by an additional purpose: to investigate the disappearance of a beloved persone.
This alone makes her an ambitious and stubborn student, driven by regret; so, if her goal involves working with Professor Rawlins, she must persuade him to help her at all costs (even by writing hilarious and crazy emails, among the most ironic parts of the novel).
For his part, the professor was a brilliant researcher who resigned himself to teaching following a tragic event in his past.
Their age-gap relationship starts slowly but then heats up: indeed, they are united by the pursuit of forbidden magic, but also by a significant physical attraction (and equally forbidden, given that they are teacher and student).
I found the dark setting well rendered, although I didn’t expect the romance/spicy elements to take such a prominent role (not that I didn’t enjoy it). Furthermore, I liked that neither protagonist was entirely good and sugar-coated, but that there was always a certain degree of mistrust between them, as if either might betray the other at the most crucial moment.
Good pace and a smooth writing style. I’d add that the level of English is accessible even for non-native speakers (if helpful).
4 stars, simply because I would have liked more focus on the mysteries surrounding the cult. If I could use a slogan: more dark and less love 😆.
